Literature in English for Germans/Austrians

A journey into "the Gilded Age"

Welcome to "The Great Gatsby", a language-based course centered around F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic work of American literature. Designed for non-native speakers at a B1-B2 level, my PassionClass offers an engaging, conversation-based exploration of the novel's plot, characters, themes, and historical context. Each week we will engage with (approximately) one chapter and encourage meaningful conversations to improve comprehension and language skills.

Who should enroll?

I am interested in American literature and look forward to exploring the Gilded Age and Fitzgerald with you. We will read the text together in class, so you don't need to prepare unless you want to. I expect to read key paragraphs and then break them down into smaller parts to explain their meaning. Participants who are unfamiliar with it will hopefully not only gain a solid understanding of the plot, but also improve their language skills and understanding of the historical context of New York in the Gilded Age through our discourse. No extensive background knowledge (or formal attire!) is required - just bring your curiosity and a willingness to engage with this classic.

Our Class Sessions

My approach emphasizes a relaxed atmosphere that ensures that all participants, regardless of language ability, can comfortably take part in discussions. I hope that our discussions will be thought-provoking and that you will have the opportunity to share your insights and perspectives on the characters and events within the novel. Planning. This course offers non-native speakers the opportunity to improve their language and analytical skills while uncovering Fitzgerald's social commentary in The Great Gatsby. Join us on a journey through the pages of this literary classic, where the emphasis is on understanding and appreciation, making it an ideal course for anyone wishing to explore the captivating world of Gatsby and the Gilded Age. Thank you!
